Ombudsman Investigates Legal Delays in Pati Religious School Case: A Historic Moment
Historic Moment – A Historic Moment in the fight for justice has emerged as the Ombudsman initiates a thorough investigation into the legal process surrounding the dugaan kekerasan seksual at Pondok Pesantren Tahfidzul Qur’an Ndholo Kusumo in Pati, Central Java. This case has drawn significant attention due to the prolonged delays in judicial proceedings, which have raised concerns about the protection of victims and the continuity of education for hundreds of santri. The Ombudsman’s involvement underscores its commitment to ensuring transparency, accountability, and equitable treatment of all parties involved, especially those who have been affected by the situation.
A Historic Moment of Institutional Oversight
During the Investigasi atas Prakarsa Sendiri (IAPS) that took place from 8 to 10 Mei 2026, the Ombudsman conducted direct field visits to monitor the progress of the case and coordinate with multiple stakeholders. These included the Polda Jawa Tengah, Polres Pati, UPTD PPA Kabupaten Pati, the pesantren’s management, witnesses, and victim support groups. “This Historic Moment highlights the Ombudsman’s role in holding institutions accountable,” said Syafrida R. Rasahan, a member of the Ombudsman, during an interview in Jakarta on Selasa (12/5/2026). She emphasized that the presence of the Ombudsman on the ground ensures the state’s commitment to the victims, beyond mere legal action.
“A Historic Moment is created when the state actively intervenes to safeguard the rights of children and youth,” added Syafrida. “The delay in legal proceedings must not compromise their access to education or their psychological well-being. It is crucial that all institutions involved demonstrate swift and transparent responses to this issue.”
Challenges in the Legal Process
The Ombudsman’s findings revealed that the legal process faced obstacles during a specific period, leading to temporary operational halts at the pesantren. This disruption impacted 252 santri, including 48 who are orphans, in their daily learning and activities. Syafrida pointed out that such delays could have long-term consequences, particularly for vulnerable students. “The Historic Moment of this investigation serves as a reminder of the need for institutional collaboration to prevent further harm to the community,” she stated.
Additionally, the Ombudsman highlighted the importance of timely legal action in preserving the credibility of the justice system. The case has become a symbol of broader challenges in addressing sexual violence within religious education settings, prompting discussions about the need for systemic reforms and stronger safeguards for victims. The ongoing inquiry is expected to shed light on how the legal framework can better protect the rights of all parties involved in such cases.
Steps Toward Resolution and Accountability
Following the initial investigation, the Ombudsman has committed to expanding its analysis by engaging with key government ministries and agencies. These include the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Pati District Prosecutor’s Office, and local authorities. The aim is to create a comprehensive report that addresses not only the legal aspects of the case but also the administrative and social implications.
By involving multiple units, the Ombudsman ensures that all perspectives are considered, reinforcing its role as an independent watchdog. Syafrida stressed that the Historic Moment of this investigation is a call to action for all stakeholders to prioritize the well-being of the victims and the educational rights of the santri. “This is not just about resolving a single case, but about setting a precedent for future legal processes,” she noted. The expanded inquiry will also examine the governance structure of the pesantren to identify potential weaknesses that may have contributed to the delays.
In the context of a Historic Moment for justice in Indonesia, this case has become a focal point for public discourse on accountability and institutional effectiveness. The Ombudsman’s proactive approach has set a new standard for how similar cases can be handled in the future, ensuring that victims are not left in limbo while the legal system works to provide clarity and closure. This initiative not only strengthens the Ombudsman’s reputation but also amplifies its impact on shaping fair legal practices across the nation.
